Progress on Health Care Reform – Keep Up the Good Work
Progress on Health Care Reform
All the contacts with legislators are making a difference. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee is expected to vote this month on the Affordable Health Choices Act, legislation that includes long-term services and supports provisions similar to the CLASS Act. HELP Committee members and staff discussed the need for action on long-term services and supports at a heavily attended press briefing last Monday, where Barbara Manard, AAHSA's vice president for long-term care health strategies, was a featured panelist. The health care reform issue is moving swiftly, with the Senate Finance Committee and a centrist Republican group expected to release legislative proposals this week. House Democrats have tentatively scheduled committee mark-ups for next week. There must be a continued push on this issue with legislators if long term care is to succeed in getting a fairer and more sustainable mechanism for funding services and supports in the final health care reform legislation. Please Contact Congress and let them know how important this issue is to you, your current and future residents and clients, and ultimately to the federal and state programs that now finance long-term services and supports.
